The Triquetra

I instinctively write in a pattern of three, it’s my writing style! You’ll find this powerful writing technique in nearly all of my picture books. But I’m not the first to be connected to this power of three philosophy, better known as The Triquetra.

The Triquetra is an ancient symbol with three interconnecting arcs. Dating back to around 500 BCE, some scholars believe the triquetra has Celtic origins. Today, this ancient symbol represents multiple meanings throughout the world. For instance, within the Christian religion, there are three elements: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. When we discuss the passage of time, there are three domains: past, present, and future. And when reflecting on the 1970s blend of jazz and R&B music, one pop band comes to mind: Earth, Wind, and Fire. This ancient symbol represents many facets of life and the list of the power of three is endless.

For me, there’s something about the triquetra that makes sense and brings me peace. In my life, the three intersecting pieces represent my three passions—literature, science, and travel. The circle that interlaces each of those elements is childhood. Our childhood experiences shape who we become as adults, that’s why I became a pediatrician and a writer of stories for early readers—so that I may foster children’s growth and development, and perhaps shape the adults they will become.

The Triquetra has different meanings to numerous people … what does it mean to you?

amber, pendant, jewelry
