Happy New Year, friends! It’s 2022, and with a new year comes exciting possibilities.
I don’t participate in New Year’s resolutions (primarily because I have failed so many of them in the past). But I do believe, and participate, in the enthusiasm and “fresh start” concept that the resolutions bring with them. With that enthusiasm, however, it is of the utmost importance to set realistic goals for success. We each have our own techniques and ways to accomplish goals, and I personally subscribe to the S.M.A.R.T. goals.
I recently began incorporating S.M.A.R.T. goals into many aspects of my life and this technique has helped me set and meet goals. I’d like to share this acronym with you as you embark on your own goals.
Back in 1981, when I was just a wee little infant, a consultant for Washington’s Water Power Company named George Doran developed S.M.A.R.T. goals. Forty-one years later I use this simple acronym to keep me on track and it goes something like this:
S.M.A.R.T. goals
S: Specific. Make your goals clear and specific for effective planning. What do you want to accomplish and why is this goal important?
M: Measurable. Track your progress and hold yourself accountable to deadlines to prove you are making progress.
A: Achievable. Set realistic goals that can be accomplished and are within your own control, not the power of others.
R: Relevant. The goals should be relevant to you and align with your values.
T: Time-based. Set a realistic end date to prioritize and motivate yourself, and not allow procrastination to run amok.
For me, when I incorporate these S.M.A.R.T. goals along with prioritizing my health, both mental and physical, I thrive and am more likely to achieve my goals. I also acknowledge the delightful moments that have blessed my life and I express gratitude and thanks to those around me who support and encourage me. Lastly, I do my best to remain enthusiastic and optimistic and remain steadfast in all my pursuits.
I believe that when we set S.M.A.R.T. goals, express gratitude, prioritize our health, and remain enthusiastic, anything is possible. Good luck to you and all your endeavors. I believe in you!
Great advice! Simple and to the point. Thanks!
