I love everything about Autumn. Some of my favorite things about this season includes wearing scarves as the cool crisp air runs through my hair invigorating my senses, the vibrant color of leaves gently drifting down to the ground then crunching beneath my Autumn boots, and … the Fall Writing Frenzy Contest.
The Fall Writing Frenzy Contest was created by agent/author Kaityln Sanchez and children’s author Lydia Lukidis. The contest challenges kidlit writers to write a story/poem/mood piece in 200 words (or less) by prompting imagination with Autumn inspired images. The winners are gifted a critique by donors—so a big THANK YOU to all the generous donors! In the process of this three day writing contest we create some awesome connections with fellow writers. For more information, visit #FallWritingFrenzy.
I hope you enjoy my entry. I’d love to hear your comments and feedback.
Happy Autumn!
It's Halloween!
Off to school the children went
In costumes and make-up galore
Eager to trick their teachers a bit,
Boo! It’s Halloween!
After school they hurried home
Stomping on crispy leaves
That blazed bright red and burnt orange,
Crunch! It’s Halloween!
Flavors of Autumn awakened taste buds
As cinnamon filled the air
With sweet apples and pecan pies,
Yum! It’s Halloween!
The kiddos carved plump pumpkins
And decorated the house and yard
With scary music and blinking lights,
Wow! It’s Halloween!
Watch-out! Black cat and frantic bat
And creepy crawly bugs
Is that a ghost with dripping blood?
Yikes! It’s Halloween!
Pretty princess and gory goblins
Ran from door to door
With pranking pirates and wicked witches,
Trick! It’s Halloween!
Lots of chocolate, gummies, and gum
In pillowcases and paper bags
That children ate till tummies ached,
Treats! It’s Halloween!
In bed they laid whispering stories
With flashlights and creepy sounds
Dreaming of next year’s costumes,
Yep! That’s Halloween!
You captured the joy of Halloween for me! I liked the use of an almost refrain (is that a technical term?). Great imagery and feeling! Can’t wait for Halloween!
Thanks, Dena. I’m glad it resonated with you.
From the start of the day to the end of day, full of Halloween fun. I like the refrain throughout, the alliteration, and the way you structured your lines. It gave it a nice it a bouncy beat. So much fun to read. Good luck!
Thanks so much, Ashley. I really enjoyed writing it, so I’m thrilled it came across.
So lyrical and lovely!!!
Thanks, Annette
Nice use of the It’s Halloween! repetition, while changing it up slightly to compliment the stanza. Really good job, Guitar. –Melisa Wrex @mowrex (Twitter)
